Dear Educator
The Business Education Resource Consortium is pleased to announce that our 1998 staff development activities
include opportunities for you to attend BUSINESS EDUCATION DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMS. Nine high schools, two community
colleges, and one middle school have been identified to host one-day demonstration programs. Demonstration programs
during the past three years have been well received with more than 1,250 educators attending.
Demonstration sites will conduct on-site visits to:
- Demonstrate to educators in business and other disciplines, business and industry personnel, and community
representatives a business education curriculum that prepares youth for a broad range of business career paths.
- Identify methods and strategies for implementing a relevant, sequenced high-technology curriculum in programs
designed to prepare students to transition to work and/or advanced education.
- Assist all educators in strengthening and improving their teaching skills and instructional programs by providing
opportunities for visitation, networking, and sharing strategies and materials.
The one-day Demonstration Programs are scheduled from March 19 to May 15, 1998. We encourage you to register
today. The individual registration fee of $40 includes lunch and materials. School teams are encouraged with a
10% discount in fees for three or more from the same site. For further information, please contact Kay Orrell,
Jim Farmer, or Anne Lee at 805-922-6966 Ext. 3613.

Building on the past two year’s participation in the Business Education Demonstration Program, Chaffey College
programs this year will focus on career mobility in the four career paths: Accounting, Business and Office Technology,
Computer Information Systems, and Computer Graphics. Emphasis will be placed on Chaffey’s A+ Certificate which
has added a greater dimension in Business Education. Computer graphics brings an interdisciplinary component to
the development of Electronic Commerce courses. The participants will have the opportunity to review the results
of faculty internships and how those internships effect curriculum modification, advisory council selections, and
student internships. Chaffey College provides a broad spectrum of courses in an articulated sequence leading to
a certificate, an associate degree, or transition to a four-year institution.

Articulation |
Sonora Union High School’s BIS Career Path began in 1992 when the Yosemite Tech Prep Consortium was formed. Business
and industry personnel, area high schools, and college administrative and instructional staff helped in the development
of the Office Assistant/Administrative Career Path which is articulated with Columbia College. The Office Occupations
course provides students an opportunity to work in a model office setting. The up-to-date equipment includes 486DX
IBM compatible computers, internal phone system, fax machine and copy machine. Students apply for office receptionist
and office assistant positions by completing an application, developing a resume, taking pre-employment tests,
and participating in an interview. Six of the courses in the BIS career path have been articulated and coherently
sequenced with Columbia College. An integrated Business/English course, Contemporary Communications, is being developed
for implementation

In its second year of implementation, the International Business program targets 12th grade students. In a simulated
project, teams of students develop and manage an international corporation. They secure manufacturing information,
develop a target market, and arrange for multinational financing of their product. You will see a multi-media marketing
presentation and computer-generated portfolio, a part of the authentic assessment of student understanding of the
State Frameworks in American Government & Economics. You will receive examples of the portfolios, sample lesson
plans, and internet resources for student and teacher use. Examples of students’ work will be displayed incorporating
their core academic courses and advanced work related to international business.
